Modeling Folds Relief Pattern

In art, design, and geometry, folding involves bending or creasing a material—such as paper, fabric, or other flexible substances—into defined shapes or patterns. Folding techniques can also be used to create multidimensional forms and structures, blending artistic expression with practical functionality. In this short tutorial video, I am modeling a folds relief pattern. This pattern stands out due to its resemblance to a collapsible folding system[1], combining both structural and aesthetic qualities. We refer to it as a folds relief pattern because it also mimics a relief design, creating subtle light and shadow effects that enhance its visual appeal.

This video series showcases various in-class exercises I conducted in a freshman-year Architectural Geometry course. Using Rhinoceros software, we explore Euclidean constructions, basic drawing, and transformation commands. In addition to those, I love to study fundamental fractals, regular and semi-regular tessellations, patterns, and modeling techniques, including unrolling polyhedra. These short drawing exercises are also beneficial for junior-level architects, interior designers, industrial designers, and enthusiasts from other disciplines. I will be publishing exercises each week on my blog and other platforms. So, here is today’s exercise: modeling folds relief pattern.

The software used in this course is Rhinoceros 3d (www.rhino3d.com[2]).
