This year’s “Lanterns” assignment was nothing short of spectacular. It left both the students and faculty in awe of the creative brilliance displayed. Despite facing constraints in terms of time and experience, the Basic Design [1]students surpassed all expectations. They crafted mesmerizing compositions of polyhedra and intricate unrolled surfaces. Their ability to conceptualize and execute such remarkable lantern designs can be attributed to the valuable skills they honed in their Architectural Geometry[2] courses.

Throughout the studio sessions, we introduced a myriad of examples, including the innovative IQ light[3], to ignite the students’ imagination. Short-term exercises served as stepping stones, allowing them to acquaint themselves with the technicalities of the craft. With each passing day, their confidence grew. They delved headfirst into the development of their unique designs, eager to bring their visions to life.

In a bid to strike the perfect balance between aesthetics and practicality, the students opted for a careful selection of materials. Lightweight, semi-transparent, and durable PVC sheets became the preferred choice. This ensured the lanterns would not only showcase breathtaking beauty but also stand the test of time.

The journey to completion was nothing short of a labor of love. The students dedicated an entire month to refining their designs, consistently engaging in two studio discussions every week. The exchange of ideas and constructive feedback during these sessions proved invaluable, nurturing a collaborative spirit among the budding architects.

While the students remained faithful to their initial concepts, some chose to explore uncharted territories, resulting in captivating deviations from the original lamp designs. These variations not only added depth to the collection but also demonstrated the students’ willingness to push boundaries and embrace their individuality as designers.
