First Year Design Exercises 2006-2007
This paper presents the beginnings of my journey into architectural education, presented at Yıldız Technical University Architectural Education Symposium 2007, together with YTU/CADU staff; Ela Çil, Birgül Çolakoğlu, Meral Erdoğan, Fulya Akipek, Oya Pakdil, and Şebnem Yalınay. It includes different exercises from various studio instructors, all motivated by contemporary computational design theory. This was one of the milestones in the first year of education of a computation-based studio in Turkey, which we’re sustaining at İstanbul Bilgi University Basic Design studios today. Most of the interpretations about the relationship between technology and architecture sets out this relationship focusing on the technological advances. We believe this interpretation results an utilitarian and reductionist perspective. Whereas, such researches should be addressed with an integrated approach including architectural design, industrial design, mechanical design, urban design, textile design. Digital technologies should help tighten the relationships between these design domains. Within the intersection of science and art, design finds its own course of research methods and tools. This approach (mostly called as “design research”) is now reflecting its outcomes into architectural education. Design research also helps to connect the design domains with interdisciplinary researches. In our studios, we consider design research as an umbrella context for architecture. Within this approach we are trying to keep the design studios in close contact with diverse fields of art, science, engineering and fabrication domains.
Bu bildiride, mimari tasarım eğitiminin ilk yıl stüdyolarında, sayısal akıl başlığı altında toplanabilecek kısa süreli atölye çalışmalarından bazıları açıklanmaktadır. Seçilen örnekler, hesaplamalı tasarım, dijital tasarım ya da sayısal tasarım başlıkları altında yer alan araştırmaları eğitim ortamına yansıtan ön çalışmalar olarak değerlendirilebilir. Bu bağlamda bugün sunulan örnekler stüdyo kurgusunun tamamını içermemekte, hesaplamalı tasarım ortak paydasında buluşan, ama farklı yöntemler deneyen stüdyo alıştırmalardan oluşmaktadır.
