Emergent Polygons
This is my first post in designcoding, dated 14.11.2011. I revisited the code and decided to re-publish it in 2024. Hello World! This is the Emergent Polygons definition, one of the first Grasshopper studies I made while learning the language. This is a very efficient programming language for designers and architects since it utilizes geometric relationships very intuitively. I think it will be more popular and widely used in the upcoming years. Last year, I started my experiments on this. Some of the main concepts of design geometry and basic design studies were used to include emergent geometries. We used to ask and discuss with students the exploration and perception of new shapes out of complex compositions. What could be the rules that govern such an exploration? This is an interesting and difficult question.
Here is a simple definition in Grasshopper that simulates a process of discovering polygons with the selected number of edges. Of course, it is not the same emergence process of the human mind. However, it was an interesting challenge for me. I updated this 2011 definition in 2021. The images show a slight shift in the colors (which seems to be caused by the wrong calculation of the number of edges). You can download and use the Emergent Polygons definition and further develop it for your purposes.
You can rebuild the definition by looking at the diagram above. However, if you want to support my website by downloading my working Grasshopper file; would you consider being my Patreon? Here is the link to my Patreon page including the Grasshopper files for the Emergent Polygons and more.
