Here is a design exercise I’ve been giving to students. It aims to familiarize students with the concept of dataflow diagrams used in Grasshopper. Dataflow is a different concept than conventional computer programming. Here is a good comparison between control flow and dataflow languages. In most educational settings (such as courses and workshops) we concentrate on the fundamental issue of dataflow management via design projects. This requires us to think […]

This project is developed in the summer workshop titled Robotic Earthcrafts conducted at İstanbul Bilgi University Architectural Design graduate program. Students call this project “ZOM”. Students are Murat Sökün, Zeynep Çakmak, and Özlem Güven. We organized the workshop together with Fulya Akipek and Hülya Oral. You can find more details about the workshop here. In this project, a simple robot code created the EPS molds of the rammed-earth module. Below […]
Can digital design and robot technology be integrated with an ecological design approach? The robotic earthcrafts workshop at Istanbul Bilgi University attempts to relate to biological parameters and digital design and fabrication processes. Thus, the summer school will include seminars and practices on computational design, robotic fabrication, rammed-earth construction techniques, and permaculture design principles to discuss and experience the relationships between technology and ecology. So, the results will be the […]
Inspired by this cut-fold pattern, we developed a prototype with Fulya Akipek. The first experiments were made from 3mm thick foamboards and they worked very well with 50×70 plates. However, when the project gets bigger and bigger, we needed to add a joint detail and use 5mm thick foamboards to achieve our goal (that is to develop a 1m by 2.5m shutter system). Then, we tried to animate its folding behavior by […]
Together with Fulya Akipek and Mehmet Ali Altın, we’re conducting a 4-day workshop at Anadolu University, Eskişehir, between the 1 and 4th of May. We’ll be focusing on Grasshopper + Firefly + RhinoNest (the casual trio), in order to introduce some of the basic concepts of parametric design to students. Materyal dünya, sayısal ortamın olanaklarıyla entegre edildiğinde beklenmedik performanslar açığa çıkabilir. Parametrik modelleme teknikleri, tasarımcıya tekil ürünün ötesinde olasılık setlerinin […]
A newly established student club, “E3 Architecture and Design” is organizing a two-day workshop at İstanbul Bilgi University Faculty of Architecture between June 10-11, 2013. The Grasshopper Workshop will be the first one in the faculty. The event will be conducted at our computer lab. so the seats are limited to 28. I’ll try to explain the basic concepts of dataflow management in computer-aided design. Also, I plan to test […]
Below is the final production of the three-day workshop at Bolu İzzet Baysal University Faculty of Engineering and Architecture. For more information about the process and the photos from the first student prototypes, you may visit the workshop blog at infections2.blogspot.com Grasshopper definition developed within the workshop is a simple multi-attractor system that deforms (or re-constructs) a regular square grid using the well-known Voronoi subdivision. I’ll post the definition here.
This is the third and the last project of the Infections workshop conducted at YTU this week. The conceptual Framework is developed by Betül Dönmez (DEU). In this project, the host body is infected by high fever and pressure and changes its solid phase into plasma. The solid molecules of the existing body transform to become plasmatic. This substance can react to various movements around it. When someone comes close to the […]
This is another final project of the three-day workshop at YTU, named Infections. A conceptual framework is developed by Bahar Aybudak (METU) and Zeynep Gür (ITU). The cellular forms come together to set the existing wall (host body). The wall represents the body structure, in which in case of any infection, various challenges could be seen in parallel with the immune system. The struggle with the mentioned infection is observed through […]
This is one of the three final projects of the Infections workshop at YTU. The conceptual framework is developed by Begüm Aktaş (YTU) and Merve Özhan (BAU). According to them; the existing host body is a 16×11 unit glass brick wall, which is constructed to separate the corridor of the faculty and to create semi-private spaces for various activities. In this project, the host body is considered the dead tissue […]
The series of workshops named “gridal infection”, or “infections” in short, explore the multiplicity of pattern deformation in a pedagogical context. It aims to encourage design students to manage an associative process of design, composed of short-term constructive assignments. Students are expected to develop an understanding of contemporary computational design techniques regarding a connection between abstraction and conceptualization. It reflects an open discussion of the abstract types and methods of potential […]
